The Castles of Northumberland.

Historic Warkworth Castle, Northumberland.
Warkworth Castle, Northumberland.

Northumberland can boast the most castles and historic houses, open to the public, of all counties in England.

We have some magnificent examples of Medieval to Victorian houses and castles. From the majesty of Lindisfarne Castle to the atmospheric ruins of Edlingham Castle, if you have any interest in the rich history of this country, this quiet county is sure to please.

Just a short drive from our cottages is the world famous Alnwick Castle. Refered to as the 'Windsor of the North', Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, being home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, whose family have lived here since 1309. The castle was, of course, made famous recently as being the setting for Hogwarts Castle in the Harry Potter films, but has played a part in a number of Hollywood films in the past.

The grounds of the castle were designed by Capability Brown and are a sight to behold, offering some of the most striking scenery in England.

The stately homes of this area are equally impressive. Belsay Hall, Cragside (home of Lord Armstrong, one of Englands most influential Victorians and the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectric energy) and Seaton Delaval Hall. The gardens at both Devaval and Cragside are impressive, to say the least. Cragside particularly, with it's incredible rhododendron maze, is also one of the last strongholds for the endangered rd squirrel.
