Almost 400 square miles of tranquil and unspoiled countryside, stretching from the Scottish borders down to the historic Hadrian's Wall. Home to the Cheviot hills, and said by many to be the finest national park in the country, the Northumberland National Park is certainly the most quiet and untouched. Nestled conveniently between the park and coast, Garden Cottages, Alnwick are within an easy drive of some of Northumberland's most incredible landscape. The hay meadows during the summer months burst into colour with the yellows and purples of the globeflower, thistle and common bistort and the rivers are some of the cleanest in the country, bursting with trout and salmon. This part of the country has, without doubt, some of the most magnificent scenery in the land and the National Park is a landscape of serene, rolling, purple moorlands and spectacular golden grassland. The wildlife of the park is diverse, to say the least. An important site of ancient woodlands, it is home to many indigenous species including deer and red squirrel. Also, the Park recently began a project to tackle the decline in nesting sites of the increasingly rare Barn Owl.
