Designated in 1958 as an Area of Outstanding Naturial Beauty, the 100 mile Northumberland coastline is home to a huge varienty of birds and wildlife, dramatic castle views and windswept shorelines. A short drive up the coast from Garden Cottages, Alnwick lies the 1,400 year old Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Almost 400 square miles of astonishing countryside encompas England's most northern national park. The least populated and least visited area of England, it's 10,000 year history is plain to see through the many Roman remains and Pele Towers. The National Park, just a few miles to the west of the cottages, is home to a bewildering range of wildlife. From Icelandic Whooper Swans and Red Grouse to Roe Deer, otters, foxes and badgers, the park is also one of the last refuges for the red squirrel and of course, the Park's iconic Curlew.
